South Carolina deputy shot during chase by driver who was later wounded, sheriff says
FAIR PLAY, S.C. (AP) — A police officer in South Carolina was shot Thursday during a chase with someone who drove away from a traffic stop, authorities said.
The suspect in the shooting was also shot a short time later, Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said in a statement.
The conditions of the deputy and the other person shot were not released.
Deputies were trying to pull over a Chevrolet Silverado when the driver sped off, Crenshaw said. Investigators did not say why deputies were trying to pull over the driver.
After about a 5-mile (8-kilometer) chase, shots were fired, and an Oconee County deputy was wounded, authorities said.
Deputies found the driver a short time later, and officers shot him, Crenshaw said.
The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office is investigating because someone involved in the shooting is related to someone at the State Law Enforcement Division, which typically handles police shootings.
