Man charged after shooting at person on North Carolina university campus, police say

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — An argument between two men on a North Carolina university campus led to shots being fired and one of the men’s subsequent arrest on Tuesday, police said.

A 74-year-old man was arrested and charged after he was accused of shooting at the man he was disagreeing with in front of the International Studies Building at Shaw University, according to the Raleigh Police Department. No one was injured in the shooting, police said.

The man was a regular guest at the building, which houses a mosque and classes inside, but he was not a student or staff member at the university, according to police.

The man who police say was shot at was also not a university student or employee.

After a brief chase, the suspect was taken into custody with three weapons in his possession, police said. Two more weapons were also found in the man’s vehicle, according to police.

He was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm on educational property, possession of a firearm on educational property, going armed to the terror of the public and cruelty to animals.

The man faces a $250,000 bond, according to Wake County Sheriff’s Office jail records. His next court date is scheduled for Wednesday, jail records show.

Shaw University is one of the oldest historically Black universities in the Southeast, according to its website. More than 1,000 students are enrolled there, according to its student profile.
