What color red is Taylor Swift's lipstick? How to create her smudge-free look for game day.
The kiss on the field had everyone talking.
It wasn’t just the kiss — it was Taylor Swift’s signature lipstick that didn’t move a millimeter.
How does she do it? Makeup artist Julie Niesen, who owns the bridal studio BRIDEFace in Cincinnati, Ohio, and wears a signature red lip of her own, has an idea of how to master Swift’s look.
What makeup does Taylor Swift use?
The lip formula that Swift is rumored to wear is Pat McGrath’s LiquiLUST Legendary Wear Lipstick in the shade "Elson 4" lined with Pat McGrath’s PermaGel Ultra Lip Pencil in “Structure” (mid-tone nude). “I’m sure you’ve seen footage of Taylor Swift dancing in the rain,” says Niesen. “More than likely, she’s wearing a product like LiquiLUST that will endure dancing, and rain, kissing Travis Kelce.” The formula can last because it’s silicon-based, which is “very water proof” and requires an oil-based remover to take off, Niesen says.
Makeup artist Pat McGrath told E! News in 2022, "When I think of Taylor, I always think of a perfect red lip. When we first did the Met Gala in 2010, we did a bold, confident, empowered look centered on red matte lipstick. For 'Bejeweled' and her VMAs appearance, I couldn't imagine not doing something with red lipstick."
The liquid formula also allows for other signature elements of Swift’s look. Niesen explains that the formula is highly pigmented, which is why the singer's red lip is always opaque. She also adds that the LiquiLust permits the wearer to be precise when applying, which is why Swift is able to create a very pronounced Cupid’s bow.
Sad news though, Swifties. This exact makeup product has been sold out for months.
What products are similar to the red lip formula Taylor Swift wears?
But don’t sweat. There are similar ones you can try instead. Niesen points to Pat McGrath’s MatteTrance Lipstick in "Elson 2." While she says that the lipstick is less long-lasting and precise than the LiquiLUST, Niesen confirms that the lipstick has “a ton of pigment in it, so it does stay on pretty well.”
She recommends a handful of other formulas that offer slightly different shades at various price points. These recommendations include Rouge Dior Forever in the shade 999 "Forever Dior”, which is also available in the liquid version, the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick in shade 01 “Always Red” and NYX’s Suede Matte Liquid Lipstick in the shade “Kitten Heels.”
How does Taylor Swift keep her lipstick from smearing?
While choosing a long-lasting lip formula is key to a smudge-free look, Niesen also shares how you can apply your lip product so that it doesn’t budge.
Here are the steps:
Line your lips with a liner that matches your lipstick’s color (a traditional look) or that matches your lips (a modern look).
Line inside your natural lip line. This will prevent feathering, which is when the lipstick slides outside of the lines of your lips.
Apply your lipstick.
Blot with a tissue. (If you’re using a liquid formula, you can skip this step.)
Brush translucent powder over your lipstick.
Apply a second coat of lipstick.
Apply micellar water to a Q-tip and clean up around the edges of your lips, if needed.
How do I find the right shade of red lipstick for me?
A red lip can communicate “strength, confidence and power,” says Niesen. She swears that a red lip can look good on anyone. It’s all about finding the right product for you, even if it's not Swift's go-to.
Niesen emphasizes the importance of trial-and-error when finding a shade that works for your skin tone. Hold up the tube to your skin and ask yourself questions like, “does this make my skin look brighter or tired?”
If you’re just starting out, Niesen recommends that you opt for a red lip oil or a red lip gloss with a red liner. She suggests e.l.f.'s Glow Reviver Tinted Lip Oil in "Red Delicious," Glossier’s Lip Gloss in "Red," Makeup by Mario’s MoistureGlow Plumping Lip Color in "Poppy" or Maybelline’s Lifter Gloss in "Sheer Red."
As you get more familiar with what you like, you can graduate to a bolder, more traditional lip. Niesen says the brand MAC has a color for everyone. She recommends the new MAC formula in the colors "Ruby Woo," "Russian Red" and "Lady Danger" or the MAC Satin formula in "MAC Red."
So, try it out. We may not all be the singer-songwriter that Swift is, but we can certainly embody her look — and confidence.
