Things are going to look a little different for the students at East Highland High School.
And while Zendaya admitted she and the Euphoria cast don’t have all the details surrounding the upcoming third season of HBO’s Euphoria, one thing she does know for sure is that time is going to pass by for Rue and her classmates.
“I don't actually know much about what is happening.” Zendaya confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on Oct. 3. “I don't quite know exactly what the season is going to look like, but I do know that the time jump is happening."
And the 28-year-old had a reasonable explanation why it makes sense for creator Sam Levinson to explore the characters’ lives outside the classroom.
“I know it's important because there's only so much high school drama you can deal with — ‘and then she cheats on her boyfriend again!’ To me, at least, it is [exciting], and it will be fascinating to see and understand these characters outside of the context of high school,” Zendaya explained. “And how all the stuff that we saw when they were kids and they were in high school affects the kind of adulthood they have and who they become in a much bigger world. I'll be interested to see what happens too.”
The Dune actress’ confirmation comes after Jacob Elordi—who plays Nate Jacobs in the series—previously hinted at the possibility of a time jump.
"I'm assuming that we're going to have to go forward," he said during a January appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon before quipping, "Otherwise it's going to seem like a weird bit."
The Saltburn actor added, "I hope [filming is] soon, otherwise they're going to have to Benjamin Button me or something. I'm going to have, like, a bad back, walking down the hallway."
In July, HBO announced the official production date for the series —which aired its second season finale in February 2022—would be January 2025.
“We could not be happier with our creative partnership with Sam and this incredible cast," executive vice president of HBO programming Francesca Orsi told Variety. "We look forward to bringing this new season of Euphoria to life for the fans.”
In addition to the production date, the network confirmed the return of principal cast members including Zendaya, Jacob, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Storm Reid, Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow and Eric Dane. Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, died July 31, 2023.
In April, Colman Domingo—who plays Rue’s sponsor Ali—shared what he hopes for the upcoming season.
“I’ve heard nothing, but I do know what we want to,” he told E! News. “I know that the want is there, that everybody wants to. But I guess it’s a lot of busy schedules, it’s trying to figure out what this new season would be. I think my show runner Sam wants to respond to the world and what we’re thinking now. And what’s on our mind, which could have been different three years ago.”
The Oscar nominee also had one message for the Euphoria fans.
“Hang in there with us,” he said. “We’ll have some answers soon and hopefully we come back with a roaring season three, with the entire cast. I’m hopeful.”
